Chairman of the Board The highest ranking authority in a company, the Chairman of the Board of Directors may be an eminent person or a representative of the controlling group. If he is also the Chief Executive or Managing Director of the company, he holds considerable executive authority; otherwise he may be treated simply as a venerable figurehead. The Chairman presides over the Annual General Meeting (the AGM) and a summarized version (unless it is short) of his speech is often published the newspapers along with his photograph.
