General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Trade treaty among 95 nations (with 28 nations following it) since 1948 to promote world trade and to provide a permanent forum for problems affecting international trade. Trade problems of developing countries receive its special attention. Among the agreements reached are tariff reductions, discriminatory tariff, non – tariff measures, subsidies, safeguards, and a revised anti – dumping code. The GATT nations met at the Tokyo Round in 1979, and the Uruguay Round in 1986. The GATT office is in Geneva . More than 80% of World trade is governed by GATT regulations.
