Jobber or Taravaniwallah A person who trades in shares, and who is located at a particular trading post on the floor of the stock exchange. He buys and sells for a small difference in price, which is called the SPREAD. If he bids at Rs 64 and offers at Rs 66, it means that he will buy a share at Rs 64 and sell it at Rs 66, keeping Rs 2 as his margin. His spread depends on the demand and supply of a share in the stock market. In London Stock Exchange he is called a market – maker, while in New York he is called a specialist. He has no contact with the investing public.
The Bombay Stock Exchange has made it mandatory for every company with a share capital of over three crores to appoint jobbers or market – markers if it seeks enlistment. This will enable investors to have both buy and sell quotations on the stock exchange, and increase the liquidity of shares.
