Junk Bond In the United States , borrowing instruments of companies, such as fixed deposits and debentures, are called bonds. Investors in these are naturally interested in the safety of their investment, the timely payment of interest, and their prompts redemption when the loan period is over. Debt instruments which do not fulfil these requirements, and which are often issued by companies threatened with takeover bids are known as junk bonds.
