Weighted Average Arithmetic means that takes into account the importance of each item making an average. For example, the prices of 32 scrips of an index will give one average, whereas the total sum at which each of the different scrips has sold in different quantities will give quite a different average. A stock market index uses the latter average, except that the market price of each of the scrips constituting the index is multiplied by the number of outstanding shares, and the weighted average arrived at.
