What makes the Indian Middle Class Great?

January 13th, 2009

Indian Middle Class comprising of 400 million people is the backbone of it’s economy , it is  a  unique mass of humanity not found anywhere else in the world, representative of typical Indian Values (which transcendent regions, religions, castes and tribes ,which are by themselves very diverse in India) and are a marketer’s dream in today’s consumption driven world economies.

What makes the Middle Class Great?

1.It comprises of people who are survivors, though somewhat diffident, conservative and mostly conformists.

2.They believe in God’s grace and want to hold on to what they have. They are risk averse . More Bank Fixed Deposits than Stocks and Shares.

3.They want secure jobs ( preferably  government jobs ) and have learnt to manage within their means. They have learnt to ‘Cut their Coat according to their Cloth’

4.They are thrifty-Indian saving rate at 28% of GDP is one of the highest in the world.

5.They want to give good education to their children and live their dreams through their progeny .They talk endlessly of their U.S and U.K based children while worrying if their children are eating well and not getting corrupted by the outside influence.

6.While justifiably  proud of their well-to-do children  , they are uncomfortable with girls going out at night and the present lesser clad children.

7. Their daughters-in-law save time by spending money while the mothers-in-law have always saved money by spending more time (cook wholesome food at home rather than order fast- food)

8.They believe in God and are reconciled to their destiny .While they listen to grand plans of their children, yet are always apprehensive.

9.They are getting accustomed to modern technology, but still keep their Fixed Deposit Receipts laminated and safe, trusting the bank and post office pass-books more than internet accounting.

10.They are the products of households where younger children accepted hand- me- downs and always affectionately wanted to get their father’s coat altered to their size on growing up. They believe in save and re-use.
Today’s use and throw culture deeply upsets them.

11.They believe in Value-for-Money.

12.They are best represented by the middle middle-class, who buy branded apparel, but at discount sales ( preferably  winter clothing at the season’s end, at bargain basement prices) , who go to see movies at the multiplex but in the morning shows at discounted rates, who comfortably fit in ( a large family) in a small car ( with a large heart ).

13.They manage to live in rented accommodations (if possible, government or company provided) and construct houses against Provident Fund and life Insurance loans. They DO NOT live on E.M.I s and still pay cash for their shopping.

14.God Forbid, if the bread earner was to lose the job ( which will mean depression and a feeling of disaster )  the homemaker can mange to keep the kitchen fire still burning for a few months by dipping into below -the-mattress-money .In such cases they will profusely offer prayers to the God of their understanding and ultimately leave everything to the Higher Power.

15.They do get snubbed for their middle-class mentality and values by their better-off children and relatives, who want to upgrade their living standards exponentially.

The giant multinational corporations salivating at this large target audience sank in huge amounts in standardized shopping malls, which have attracted foot- falls and eye-balls, but have seen flat sales, in fast-food chains, which struggled till they brought the prices down and customized their food offerings. Ultimately the global consumer goods giants recognized that the middle-age middle-class person still drinks the cola or lemon drink from a bottle, will buy a car based on fuel consumption and will take a cautious and conservative route. Of course the Corporations are lucky in so far as India has the youngest population in the world and hence cold drink cans and flat screen TVs have a chance.

Conclusion

In the global economic meltdown of today, India is relatively safe due to our conservative and cautious policies and the stoic middle class values, with deep faith in the Higher Power.

More power to the Middle-Class. May the economically backward rise to the middle-class level.

I totally agree. With credit cards instead of real cash in your hands you tend to spend more. That makes you a consumerist.. and thank God most of us are not into this credit card trap. We buy only what we need .. sometimes lesser :)

  2. J.L. singh

I fully agree with the article, but I want to add some more points such as
This middle class is the vast Market consumer.
1.This middle class is being ignored in India.
2.The multinational companies, banks etc. gave the greed to be the thought of upper middle class to the lower middle class.
    3. The middle class is suffering from inflation, curruption and mostly ignored by the profit oriented groups.
    4. They are cheated by opprtunists always either by Share market or moll facilities.
    5. Thanks God they are much more religious and some times they are cheated by some selfish Dharmgurus.

I agree with you.The points you gave in the support of your article are absolutely correct in defining the middle class culture on which the whole india relies. At the time of any emergency we can manage in a very small cash and we always teach our children how to handle that situation.

  5. Alekh Singh

Right words and agreeewith your view on India’s Middle class.

but also there is huge population of people who r just at bootom of middle class or even below Powerty line. They earn daily and also spend daily. the real market for those who produce lower end & defeatured product. like small toothpaste pack hair oil washing powder in range of Rs 2-3. also other things like cheap cinema halls, fabrics ..sold on foothpath or small retailer shop.

They have there own thinking and philosophy of life. and infact they r living there life at fullest!! :)

requesting the author to write a case study about them too

    Regards
    Alekh

the article wrirren by Arun Vedhera is very authentic and persuasive. From my own experience,i have noticed many of things to happen in our daily lives,i.e.Watching movie at Muitiplexes in the morning, buying branded clothes during sales or discounts, using cash rather than usind e-cards to buy products. And it’s also very true that due to the emergence of this middle class population,India is less affected by this current economic slowdown.Hats off to these middle class people who are trying to live LIFE in their own terms.Being brought up in a middle class background and being a big dreamer,i want young guys to come up and dream BIG for a greater India and a better community where we as well as our future generations will have better future….JAI HIND

  24. Makarand Malhotra

hey friends i am 22 yrs old and what i beleive is that these multinational companies are eating up our mildle class as the youth are joining call centers for fast cash, they dont want to study much as they r getting a huge amount of money in call centers and other such companies, well they end up spending this money in some branded clothes or food chains like mc. donalds, kfc etc which are again multinationals.
FINAL STATEMNT is they (multynational companies) pay from 1 pocket and they get back their money in other ,only loss in brilliant minds of indian youths.

  30. Sonja De

Excellent observations! And Manasvi, it was just great of you to acknowledge and praise your dad’s work. That’s another trait of the New Middle Class (NMC) generation – they are thankful and proud of their parents (OMC) who have had to struggle to survive, let alone thrive, in the old pseudo-socialist India. In a way, while many of the traits of the OMC are ancient, their risk averseness and chronic anxiety is, I believe, a response to the mindless governance of independent India, replete with caste quotas, industrial licences and top-down planning, a leadership which was usually wrong, but never in doubt – an unfortunate heritage of Gandhi’s puritanism and Nehru’s socialism. The resulting philosophy was that you have to live in the fringes of poverty and be thoroughly grateful that you are independent (= dependent on the State). Young people have to go and live in foreign lands and racist cultures, for further study and making a career. That’s the price you’ve got to pay for India’s future. We would still have been paying that price had it not been for the liberalisation forced upon India by the IMF and WB in 1991.

  31. banhi

The middle class is well said by the author as the backbone coz they r the ones who has suffered , lost and learned all the way so mistakes by them will be very rare, coz that is hw we all learn to save for the bad times ….Our country proved that during recession … isnt it ….

  32. Pushp Lamba

Some more insights into the middle-class thought process:
    1. Wants not only financial security but emotional security as well.
    2. Will usually not do anything which disturbs emotional ties.
    3. Wants to be a part of the social set-up in which he lives.
    4. Rarely does he appreciates being labeled as a ‘rebel’.
    5. Being a part of the society provides him with sense-of-protection.
    6. Receptive to new ideas but does not dash into new ventures.
    7. He may welcome innovations, if they satisfy his sense of security and if he feels that they might help him improve his economic position or social relationships.
    8. The Upper Middle Class makes the most amount of ‘prestige purchases’.
    9. He makes sure that he maintains a standard which at least befits the ‘image’ that he has in the society.
    10. Even if his finances are tight, he will look for more-than-average comforts.
    11. By poking on his sense of prestige, a marketer of consumer durables can motivate him.
    12. Is the main consumer of ‘Status Symbols’.

    What Say…!!!!

  33. yogendra

Superb Article, the author has done a great job.. hatts off

Great to read such an article after long gap.pats to author.Infact Middle class is backbone of indian society. One can observe all moral values in this particular section of society( only endemic to indian peninsula). May God Continue to shower blessings upon this society in all times to come

  37. ankit sharma

each and every point is worth representing the Indian Middle Class and 100% True when I compared it with myself. Great work done

  38. subbu

Yes, this informative news is very good to know, but our politicians are rising their head high as if India was able to overcome the recession due to their economic policies.

There will not be a point of discussion with regard to the recession, once all the looted , bribed ,cheated money taken from the Middle Class which is deposited in crores of rupees in the SWIZ BANK by the Politicians (both ruling and Opponent Parties) is taken back and utilized properly for the well fare of the poor and the middle class.

I also agree with the comments raised by J.L.SINGH

  39. Ashish

Yes,All are agree to these but now days they are not getting good leadership, all are busy with their own families, because of these who are facing problems due to these prize hike, high rates can’t oppose it in strong manner, this is creating new separations in this great Indian Middle Class.
So,please think for them also who are living with you………..
Thank You Sir for this good article..

  40. Ashish Patel

middle class has only one major problem which they faced from long duration……
that is lower prise of agriculture product and higher prise of other product thts why people’s expenditure going high and income will b lower….
so, increase the life standerd of those people, increase the prise of agriculture product…..
jay hind….. jay javan….. jay kisaan

  41. Prabhakar.D.B

    Hi
Very good observations. Please add a few more.
The middle class is mostly constituted of General Merit people ,who do not have reservation. There may be exceptions also., but a large majority do not have reservation.
Only 2% of people of India have Govt jobs in Central,State ,and public sectors. A great majority , 98% of the employed are in private sector, mainly employing through merit, till now ,some how. If reservation comes here also, Meritted people have to die.
No body amongst the reserved casts want to loose the reservation , inspite of the Creamy layer theory. By manupulations , een the sons of MP,MLA,Ministers,IAS,IPS ,and hazars of cadres in Govt retain the reservation for generations togrther. Education with reservation, jobs with reservation, promotin ,posting ,Corruption ,…all spheres with reservation criterion. No boss ever dares touch them, or he will loose their jobs.
If the Creamy layers are removed from reservation, it will give jobs ,seats to meritted people, more hard work ,saving ,progress for India. The motivation of the middle calss benefits India.
Due to frustration of the merited people of middle class , lot of brain drain, mass emigration, loss to country. Even Hargovind Khurana could not get lecturers job in Punjab Univ, when he had come back after foreign study. He had to go back. There are millions of people ,merited, did not get seats or jobs in Govt. What can you expect from Govt ,with 50% or even 68% seats, jobs for reservation quota. That is why Govt struggles with less efficiency, slow ,lacadelistic approach, cheating , and falsehood, corruption etc etc…
…India will never be a super power if this kind of reservation continues. Now with reservation for Muslims, and demand by all minorities like Christians, and hunderds of castes, creeds, clans , clamouring for reservation , the reservation will go up to 90%…..with SC,ST,OBC, MBC (Most back wards, as invented by many states), religion based , and refujees based…reservations…..etc etc ….In reality it is the Merited people have been forced to become Refujees in India , due to reservations.
If this will not change, India will never be a self sufficient ,strong, and super power…..
….I Invite all to think…and come forward and talk, agaitate, to save the Merit ,and the Merited middle classes….
    God bless them
    Regards
    Prabhakar.D.B…..Hospet, Karnatak, India….

  42. neeraj aggarwal

good article.everybody knows all these things about middle class people but when they are written in articles like this they start thinking for them.

  43. vivek

Yeah u r ri8 Mr.Prabhakar i agree with you bt ppl r very less who speak abt elimination of reservations as they r nt 1 among da sufferers (the one who gets reservation or whose family is getting profitted by that will never respond in a negative way even it has a negative impact on the whole country’s development ) they r selfish about their own profits .

this can b only achieved when everyone thinks v r indians nt hindus muslims or christians

i hope it cant b even happend after my death

In my entire life (am jus 20 nw ) i wanna c atleast one academic year where no reservation in any field is considered, dats enough

  44. Robin Mathew

Hat’s Off, its really good to know about the majority contributor’s to the growing Indian Economy that’s full of hope

  45. Bhabani

All points mentioned point towards my parents who still prefer cash over debit card, forget about credit card. One of my uncles even returned the debit card of his bank a/c, fearing that some one may(you never know) steal money from ATM with plastic cards. but one thing is for sure. though we are fast accepting what our parents have always feared e.g. EMIs, credit cards, isolated living, etc.. we still hold on to our believes & emotional values while making decisions.
That will help us stand out & save ourselves & also our country economy in coming years.

  46. vedavyas

    Sir/maam….who ever u are………..

    u r really practical and talented….yes
